MAKE YOUR MARK: BREAKING IN TO THE MUSIC INDUSTRY FOR PERFORMERS, PRODUCERS, & SONGWRITERS
It’s arguably become easier than ever for aspiring artists (performers, producers and songwriters included) to create original music and get it distributed to the public. That’s due to the increasing accessibility of recording hardware/software (like GarageBand and Logic) and the rise of digital distribution services like Tunecore, as well as streaming services like Apple Music and Spotify.
But if it’s become easier for artists to make music and distribute it without the need of a record label contract, why don’t more independent artists find immediate success—or even long-lasting success? Here’s one reason: What all artists need to achieve substantial success is the time to develop their sound and image and to connect with an audience in a genuine and meaningful way. Artists also need to craft and pursue an effective business strategy that will allow them to gain visibility in the midst of considerable traffic from their peers and competitors. The open secret behind many of today’s most successful artists – from Beyoncé to Justin Timberlake to Taylor Swift, to name a few – is that each benefited from years of label-funded artist development and A&R (artists and repertoire) that afforded them that time and that ability to connect with their audiences. Those artists also happen to be supported by deeply experienced business teams that help them behind the scenes, and plan and strategize their successful moves. These days, Artist Development has become the missing link, the process that every artist needs to achieve long-lasting success, even as it has become one of the hardest and most exclusive processes to find in an increasingly divided industry.
Over three weeks at the Institute’s facility in New York City, The Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music will exclusively open up its doors to put aspiring producers, songwriters and performers through a special DIY (do it yourself) Artist Development process. Through classroom instruction and creative assignments, participants will receive the information to hone or develop the kinds of skills they’ll need to either break into, or move up, in a fast-paced, exciting and constantly changing music industry. Participants in Make Your Mark will not only be immersed in the heart of the pulsating NYC music industry, but they’ll also get plenty of exposure to Recorded Music’s distinguished faculty and to special guests culled from the music industry. Participants will register in a required Artist Development, A&R and personal branding course in tandem with custom crafted elective classes to help aspiring songwriters, producers and performers improve their material, their techniques, and their craft.
Participants of all skill levels, from beginner to advanced, can expect to leave Make Your Mark with a much clearer sense of how to pursue success and break into the music industry than when they arrived.
