Application Requirements

The Department of Dance at NYU Tisch seeks exceptionally talented students who can commit themselves to the rigors of professional study.

A student matriculating in the Tisch School of the Arts must be admitted at two levels: as a student within a department of specialization or major, and as a student of New York University. Both Undergraduate and Graduate Admissions are limited to full-time students beginning in September only. Admission standards that pertain to the University in general can be found on the NYU Admissions website and should be read in conjunction with the department's standards. Acceptance into the dance programs are based on both the dance audition and New York University admission requirements.

The audition process involves two steps. First, students audition within the context of a technique class at Tisch, and if the applicant is selected, they will then proceed to the solo audition.

The audition consists of a condensed class in ballet technique (ballet barre and adagio) and contemporary combinations, lasting approximately one and a half hours. If the dancer passes the first part of the audition, they will be asked to perform a short (no longer than three minutes) solo dance they have learned or choreographed — something they enjoy doing. Music used for solos should be playable from an Ipod, iPhone or similar device. Please remove your passcode before the audition.

As we need to be able to see applicants' bodies in order to realistically evaluate technical level and physical potential, we ask that applicants wear clothing that does not obscure body lines. Everyone should bring regular ballet shoes; pointe shoes are only necessary if the applicant intends to do a solo en pointe.

A personal interview follows the solo performance.

Auditions will be held in New York City, Miami, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Choose the preferred site, date, and time from the Dance Audition Schedule page and mark the application accordingly. Audition slots are limited, so we strongly recommend applicants submit their application no later than December 15 if they intend to audition in Chicago or Los Angeles.
