Karolina Ziulkoski, Future Past News
Two ITP Alumni, Karolina Ziulkoski and Andrea Wolf will be showing their project, Future Past News at Smack Mellon Gallery, Saturday, November 18 from 6-8pm.
92 Plymouth St @ Washington, Brooklyn, NY
Karolina Ziulkoski and Andrea Wolf are very happy to continue their collaboration. They will show Future Past News in a group show at Smack Mellon opening this weekend. 'UPROOT' is an exhibition curated by Gabriel de Guzman that showcases the work of artists who are engaging with the current state of affairs since the 2016 presidential election. Challenging the divisiveness of the present administration, this exhibition presents an array of responses to the political climate.
Future Past News is an Augmented Reality experience that exposes disturbing parallels between present day and 1937 pre-war turmoil, hoping to raise awareness of our political choices.
The installation situates visitors in an average living room circa 1937. The news are playing on TV: governments in chaos, strikes, impending wars, powerful leaders negotiating the future of countless others. It could be today, but the images belong to an 8mm newsreel found in a flea market in Mexico City. Future Past News invites you to look at these images of the past through an AR App that switches their content to present news, juxtaposing the news from 1937 and our current state of affairs, showing how history repeats itself (if we allow it).
