Tisch Summer High School Production and Design Online Workshop

Due to the COVID-19 virus, the Tisch Summer High School Residential Program will not be taking place in New York City. The courses in this program will be offered remotely or online with asynchronous and synchronous components. Below is the updated program information. Students accepted to this program will also receive communication via email. 

Explore theatre design and management as you build your stagecraft skills.

The Production and Design Workshop offered through the Department of Undergraduate Drama is for the student who wants to pursue a career in the design, technical, management and other production areas of the performing arts.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Each week you will have 28 hours of conservatory style coursework in areas such as management, scenery, costumes, lighting, sound, drafting, drawing, and painting. You will also take a weekly Introduction to New York Theatre seminar with professional actors, directors, designers, stage managers, and faculty as guests.

Core Curriculum

Remote Format for Studio Training

The Department of Undergraduate Drama has adapted its curriculum in order to deliver the exceptional training via the online format. Students will interact with master teachers who are also working professionals. Each studio has experience teaching over this medium and has strategies that will take full advantage of this new form of education in studio classes.

Students will engage in studio training over Zoom. Below is an overview of the summer program; please reference details for each specific studio in their respective sections on this web page.

Requirements

Students must use a desktop or laptop computer (see recommendations below) with a webcam, microphone, and audio capability. Students should also have access to a smartphone or other digital recording device to record and upload video.

Recommended Computer Specs 

Computers will be central to the training this summer. We recommend a laptop (Mac preferred, but Windows is suitable) that is less than five years old with a minimum of 10 GBs free storage, running Windows 10/macOS 10.13; i5 or better quad-core processor above 1.9 GHz and 8 GBs RAM.

The 4-point studio schedule is as follows:

  • Monday 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. EDT
  • Tuesday 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. EDT
  • Wednesday 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. EDT
  • Thursday 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., 3:00 - 5:15 p.m., Theatre in NY 5:30 - 6:45 p.m. EDT
  • Friday 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. EDT

Classes will be held during studio hours only. There will also be opportunities for one on one coaching.

On Thursday, students will have a 2-point class called Theatre in New York. This class is an opportunity for students to meet and ask questions of leaders in the field of theatre. Due to the unique situation in which we find ourselves, many well-known artists are available and offering their time for this type of interaction. Drama will pursue practitioners at the highest levels of the work.

Shows/Performances

Many theatre companies have opened their archives offering the viewing of past shows. We will select four shows that the program will see as a group and discuss in studio. 

Final Events

On Thursday August 6, there will be an all-department gathering. This will be a virtual culmination of the program, during which we will recognize and celebrate the work that has been created over the duration of the month. 

On the final day, Friday August 7, parents will be invited to virtually attend and observe studio classes.

Production and Design Summer Workshop

THEA-UT 465 | 4 units

Production & Design students will study design and management as we explore stagecraft skills. Our workshop will examine how each area contributes to storytelling in the theatre and how production decisions are made. Our focus is on the collaborative process at the heart of theatre-making. Taking advantage of our network, students will digitally experience Broadway and Off-Broadway production, virtually visit theatres, museums, shops, and shops. With those experiences in mind, we will discuss different styles of production and divergent storytelling techniques. Guest speakers will include designers, technicians and managers from the New York performing arts community.

Skill building classes will introduce scenery and costume crafts, lighting and sound technology, drafting, drawing, and painting. We will leverage digital tools to investigate environment, scale and proportion. Management classes will introduce the principles and practices of stage and production management. The workshop will conclude with the creation and presentation of an original theatre piece combining skills gained in all areas of management, design and technical theatre. Finally, we will work with the students to develop their resumes and portfolios to best showcase their talents.

COURSES

Scenery:

This class will explore the fundamental concerns & practices of designing & producing scenery for live events. Following an introduction to the overall process, students will engage in a spatial development and modeling exercises and rough design for their final group project.

Costumes:

This course will provide a general overview of the costume design process and also touch on some elements of basic costume construction. This course will provide you with the tools necessary to read and analyze a text in terms of clothing, research both period and character style,and ultimately provide a visual representation of your design for each costume in the text. We will touch base on how costumes come into being. We will explore basic patterning techniques as well as methods for modifying and altering existing clothing to help them serve your design.

Lighting:

This course is an introductory overview of lighting designer that aims to cover selected practical elements and best practices, and the design and collaborative process.

  • Functions and qualities of stage lighting and its relationship with other disciplines

  • Lighting instruments and accessories

  • Hang, circuit, and focus instruments properly and safely.

  • Introduction to basic programming.

  • Design and Collaborative Process

Sound:

This course will provide an overview of the techniques and concepts regarding theatrical sound design and live audio engineering through the following topics:

  • How sound is used to build a narrative and its applications in performance.

  • Manipulation of digital audio

  • The basics of signal flow.

  • Sound reinforcement tools and techniques.

  • Script analysis and cue generation.

Stage Management:

Stage Management presents the theatrical production process from the point-of-view of a stage manager by breaking down the production process into nine distinct phases. The importance of safety, techniques in communication and collaboration, and stage management theory are integrated into each step of the 9-part process. Through class discussions, various readings, in-class exercises, and collaborative projects, students gain a general knowledge of stage management skills and may begin thinking about their individual management style.

Production Management:

At the end of this class you will understand various management and organizational plans for producing theater. You will create a production schedule and budget. We will discuss and plan short-term and long-term, goal driven processes.

Script Analysis, Collaboration & Creation: 

In Script Analysis, we’ll cover basic tools and techniques to analyze a text and unearth information and clues to inform the creation of a world onstage. We’ll use examples from dramatic texts, as well as the source text for the culminating project for the program. In Collaboration & Creation, we’ll explore the stages of the collaborative process, the director-designer-manager relationship, and the evolution of an original idea into a fully realized production concept. We’ll use the source text for the culminating project of the program as the foundation for our exploratory exercises and collaborative discussions.

Drafting:

We will participate in drafting exercises to understand how architectural and theatrical elements are communicated to fellow collaborators on a production. We will understand the language of lines, the typical two-dimensional views used to communicate three-dimensional space; how scale is used; creation and interpretation of plans, sections and elevations. We will introduce computer rendering programs – Photoshop and Illustrator. We’ll do a final conversation/demo of computer-aided drafting.

Drawing and Graphics:

Students will participate in drawing and graphics exercises that help strengthen visual communication. Throughout the class we will touch upon an assortment of drawing techniques; blind contour drawing, still life drawing, gestures and figure drawing. Introductions to Color theory, mixing and watercolor techniques will be explored.

New York Theatre

THEA-UT 860 | 2 units

All students will be registered in this course.

This weekly theatre studies seminar is taught by NYU faculty. This class is an opportunity for students to meet and ask questions of leaders in the field of theatre. Due to the unique situation in which we find ourselves, many well-known artists are available and offering their time for this type of interaction. Drama will pursue practitioners at the highest levels of the work.
